More Into the Woods dorking ahead:

My friend and I were having an in depth conversation about a particular line. “I was just trying to be a good mother.” It’s a funny line! The audience laughed at it every night, partly because of the line itself and partly because I’d spent the last few moments imitating the ugly crying faces Rapunzel was making as she sobbed on the ground. So yeah, structured to be a comedic scene! But the more I think about it, the more sad it is. Because the Witch really WAS just trying to be a good mother. She had no idea what that even meant. Her mother was pretty much evil. Cursed her, possibly dragged her to hell/killed her (there’s lots of interpretations) at the end…yeah, not a very good mother figure. So the Witch tries to be everything for Rapunzel that she never got from her own mother. Love, care, protection…and ultimately fails. And wow, when it’s all in context “I was just trying to be a good mother” is just so so heartbreaking.

My theater company just had our inaugural show, Columbinus by Stephen Karam and PJ Paparelli. The play is a documentary theater piece about the shootings at Columbine High School in 1999. I was cast as Dylan Klebold, one of the shooters. When I told them about the show and my casting, my parents switched between acting like my dog had died and that I was typecast. I mean, I do have long hair and own my own trenchcoat….

A show I’m in goes up on Friday and is double cast, and two days before we go up, someone decided to say something about the differences between the casts. It blew up! Here’s to a four-week run with this tension in the air.

epo9thenardier replied your post Oh man, I’m so glad my school does auditions differently (there’s a required song from the show for each character) because I would’ve had NO idea what to sing for the Witch. The Witch is definitely very belty so you have to show that you can rock Last Midnight with that, but there are two very different sides to her- it depends on which one you want to show. You could go comedic and charactery, or you could go intense and vulnerable. I’m singing Much More for my senior recital, and for some reason it reminds me of The Witch (I think it’s because it’s RIGHT in her range, but also something else). She is so near and dear to my heart that it’s really hard for me to separate her from the sort of reality she has in my mind, so I’m gonna post this so people can give you ideas! If you don’t want this public, just message me and I’ll take it down right away.Comment below or send its-totally-mikensley an ask if you have a song or two that might work!

Oh dear lord if you are talking about Much More from The Fantasticks that is the wrong song to sing if auditioning for the witch. That’s more of a Cinderella song. Much More is barely belty&that’s what the Witch does most of the show: belt. Sorry ranting.

It depends how you sing it. Having sung much more and all the Witch songs, it definitely is in the same area I used for most of The Witch. When I first got the piece, it made me think about what the Witch could have been like before her story started- before her mother cursed her, before the magic, before the beans, EVERYTHING. That’s why it reminds me of her. I guess in a sense it could be a Cinderella song because it’s pretty, but something in “I’d like to be not evil” and “Perhaps I’m bad or wild or mad” and “Don’t let me be normal” sounds like the Witch before she experienced whatever it was that made her so broken.

its-totally-mikensley sent: Hey! So I just wanted to start out by saying that your blog speaks my life and it is a beautiful thing you are doing here. Okay fangirl over, here comes my big problem... My school is performing Into the Woods and auditions are in three weeks. I very desperately want to be The Witch and I am at a loss of ideas for audition songs. I'm aware you were The Witch and I would love to have a few suggestions. I'm a strong alto, however I can belt and sing soprano. Help is appreciated! Thanks!(:

Freshman year I was one of the only two girls cut from the volleyball team, so I wound up doing theater instead. Now I’m president of our ITS chapter, and just closed my eleventh show with my high school.

I auditioned as the Cheshire Cat for my school’s production of Alice in Wonderland a few years ago, and I ended up getting a made up role. My best friend was cast as Alice- though she wasn’t great.
I talked to the director about the casting after she told me I was the only one holding up the one scene I was in. She told me that the reason I hadn’t gotten Alice was that I hadn’t auditioned as her.

Every time I do a show in which I need to be scruffy, my makeup sponges get destroyed each time I use them. It gets to be a pain when you start finding sponge bits on your face.

I would walk up to a group of my friends and without fail they would yell, “PAPA GE DON’T COME AROUND ME!” It got pretty lonely being the god of death.

We open Dark of the Moon in 3 days and our female lead also created our programs. Since our stage manager likes to be known as the HBIC, it was put in the program as a joke but she forgot to take it out before printing 600 copies.
Oops.

Apparently four actress is too many for them to be nominated as one (although there weren’t any problems with the multiple Billies from Billy Elliot all winning Best Actor). Not to mention all of the Matildas are 10/9 years of age and are A-MAY-ZING. Not cool, Tony Awards.
